Welcome to the Sigma Alpha family! We are so excited to have your daughter as a part of our sisterhood. For the past two decades, you have pursued her best interests and molded her into the woman she is today, and it is our mission to continue to enrich her life and cultivate her into a stronger woman.
Our core values set us apart from other organizations. Our four pillars are scholarship, leadership, fellowship, and service. From your daughters experience in Sigma Alpha, you can expect her to: |
Grow as a leaderEach semester, we have a Professional Development Dinner, which is a professional potluck dinner where were host a speaker. Each semester the speaker is different! Last semester we had the department head of the Biochemistry department, Dr. Gillespie, speak to us. In the past we have had Dr. Wood talk to us about pursuing careers in male dominated fields about and Lori Grenier speak to us about the importance of building our individual brands. We also send several sisters to the Sigma Alpha leadership conference every year so they can develop their leadership skills. This year, the conference is in Richmond, Virginia, so we hope to send even more sisters than ever before

passionately serve othersThis past year, we participating in multiple philanthropies that other organizations hosted and hosted a few of our own. Last fall, we hosted a charity concert called Harvest Havoc. We also organized a food drive. Both benefited Feeding America: Southwest Virginia. Throughout the year, sisters walk shelter dogs, donate blood, participate in Big Event, and do so much more!
Over the summer, we were awarded by National Headquarters the second place prize in our region for our service program. Next year, we hope to get first place! |
Cultivate friendshipsYour daughter will meet dozens of new friends from all over the country, who come from different backgrounds and have unique stories. Throughout the year, sisters do tons of fun activities together such as visiting pumpkin patches, going bowling, and grabbing ice cream. Our bonds of fellowship run deep and in the future give us a huge professional network that can lead to internships and jobs.

Pursue academic achievementSchool is always the number one priority! Sisters are given excused absences for class and for review sessions so they never feel like they aren't putting school first. We also have a Scholarship chair whose duty is to organize study hours and give sisters information about upcoming scholarships. Study groups are commonplace in our chapter and since many of us are agriculture majors there is often a whole row of sisters sitting together in each class to help each other learn.
This past academic year, our very own Cassie Bienert was given the 2018 Outstanding Senior award for the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences for her scholastic and service achievements. In 2017, Cassie was our Scholarship chair. Sigma Alpha is also proud to have had the 2018 Outstanding Senior in Dairy Science as part of our organization: Nikki Hardy. Nikki previously was our President! |

If you're nervous about your daughter joining a sorority, we don't blame you! With what you see on the news every day about greek life, we understand that you may be hesitant for your child to join a greek organization. This sorority has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing, and we strive to protect all of our members and membership candidates emotional and physical well-being.
